AI Edit & Smart Continue

Overview

AI Edit and Smart Continue are the two tools for working on text right in the editor as you write. AI Edit rewrites or refines text you already have. Smart Continue keeps your writing going when you pause. Both stay tied to your document and your selected sources. The third in-editor tool, AI Chat, is the agentic assistant for discussion and research, and it has its own page.

AI Edit

What it does

AI Edit rewrites or refines text you already have based on what you tell it. It can work on a bit of selected text or a whole block, and it stays tied to your document.

How to use it

1. Pick what to edit.

   • Highlight the text and click the AI Edit button, or

   • To refine a whole text block, click the stars icon on the left side of the block.

2. Say what you want. A prompt bar shows up. Type how you want the text rewritten or refined, or pick one of the ready-made options:

   • Improve writing: clean it up and make it clearer.

   • Change tone: shift the register.

   • Simplify: make it easier to read.

   • Translate: put the text into another language.

   • Humanize: make the text read more naturally. This is about flow and readability. It's not for getting past AI detection and shouldn't be used or described that way.

3. Review and redo if needed. Once AI gives you the edited text, you can prompt it again to refine further, or hit Try again.

Smart Continue

What it does

Smart Continue picks up your writing where you stop. When you pause, it carries on from your cursor, either finishing the thought you started or writing the next sentence, and it cites as it goes.

How it works

• It kicks in when you pause. Put your cursor in the document, and if you pause for a couple of seconds, Smart Continue starts writing from where you stopped.

• It finishes or keeps going. If you paused mid-sentence, it completes the sentence. If you paused at the end of a finished sentence, it writes the next one.

• It follows your document. It stays in line with your overall structure and the flow of the paragraph you're in.

• It cites as it writes. Smart Continue adds citations to the text it generates, pulled from the papers you've already cited in the document and the sources you picked in citation sources. That's the same source scope AI Writer uses everywhere else.

Turning Smart Continue on or off

Smart Continue is controlled by the Smart Continue switch at the top right of the document viewer. Flip it off there if you don't want AI continuing your writing when you pause.

When to use which

• Use AI Edit to change text you already have: tighten it, shift the tone, simplify it, translate it, or revise it to a specific instruction.

• Use Smart Continue to keep moving: let AI draft the next lines in your structure and voice when you pause.

Both pull citations from the same set: papers cited in the document plus your selected citation sources. If you want to work on the document conversationally, like discussing it, finding and analyzing papers, or generating bigger sections on request, use AI Chat.
