Use AI Chat, AI Edit, Smart Continue, and autocomplete with citations in your documents.
Write, revise, and explore sources without leaving the editor
AI Writer includes several AI tools that work inside the editor so you can draft, revise, and explore sources without breaking your writing flow. Each tool pulls from your document's cited papers or Paperguide's 200M+ paper database to generate text with inline citations.
AI features search Paperguide's 200M+ paper database or your Reference Manager library to find relevant citations for generated text. Every AI-suggested passage includes inline citations you can verify before you keep it.
AI Chat
AI Chat gives you a sidebar workspace for discussing your draft, finding relevant papers, and generating citation-backed text. The chat uses your document context, including the draft, cited papers, and outline, and it can search for additional papers to support your argument.
Open AI Chat
Click the chat icon in the editor sidebar to open the AI Chat panel.
Ask a question
Type your question or request. Ask about a claim in your draft, request evidence on a topic, or ask the AI to find papers that support or challenge your argument.
Insert into document
When the chat generates useful text with citations, insert it directly into your document at the cursor position.
If you want feedback on a specific passage, highlight the text first and then ask the chat about that selection. AI Chat can use the highlighted passage as context while keeping the rest of your document in view.
Use AI Chat when you need to explore ideas, gather evidence, or pressure-test an argument before editing the draft itself. The chat can suggest text, but it does not directly rewrite your document unless you choose to insert the result.
AI Edit
AI Edit rewrites selected text based on your instruction while preserving existing citation markers. Use it when the structure is mostly right but the wording, tone, clarity, or language needs work.
Highlight text
Select the passage you want to revise in the editor.
Choose an action
Pick an action from the toolbar or enter a custom instruction.
- Improve — fix grammar, tighten prose, and strengthen word choice
- Change Tone — rewrite in academic, casual, persuasive, bold, or friendly tone
- Simplify — rewrite in plain language
- Humanize — remove formulaic constructions for a more natural voice
- Translate — translate to any language

Review the result
AI returns rewritten text with citation markers preserved. Accept the change if it improves the passage, or dismiss it and keep your original text.
AI Edit works best for focused revisions on a paragraph, claim, or transition. If you need the model to generate new material instead of rewriting existing text, use Smart Continue or AI Chat.
Smart Continue
Smart Continue writes from your cursor position while staying aligned with your document's tone, structure, and argument. It reads the surrounding context so the continuation fits what you already wrote.
Place your cursor
Click where you want the AI to continue writing.
Trigger Smart Continue
Press Cmd+J on Mac or Ctrl+J on Windows, or click the Smart Continue button. Then choose an action:
- Continue
- Introduction
- Conclusion
- Key Points
- Opposing Views
- Transition
- Outline
- Custom prompt
Review and accept
AI generates continuation text with inline citations. Read the result, edit it if needed, and accept it when it matches the direction of your draft.
Smart Continue uses a two-pass citation system. If the first generation comes back without citations, the assistant retries and injects citations into the text without rewriting the substance of the draft.
When your document already includes papers, Smart Continue expects citation-backed output. If the assistant cannot produce citations after the retry, the generation fails instead of inserting unsupported text.
Autocomplete with citations
Autocomplete suggests short forward-only completions as you write. The suggestions never repeat the text before your cursor, and each suggested sentence includes at least one inline citation.
Start typing
Write normally in the editor. When you pause mid-sentence, AI generates a short completion.
Review the suggestion
A citation-backed continuation appears, usually two to three sentences long. Read it for relevance and check whether the cited papers support the claim.
Accept or dismiss
Press Tab to accept the suggestion or Esc to dismiss it.
Autocomplete is best for maintaining momentum during drafting. Because it stays short and only writes ahead of the cursor, it works well for extending a thought without changing what you already wrote.
Describe to LaTeX
Describe to LaTeX turns a plain-English math description into clean LaTeX you can render in your document. Use it when you know the equation you want but do not remember the exact syntax.
Open the Math Block
Insert a math block in the editor and switch to the Describe tab.
Describe the equation
Type a plain-English description such as the integral of e to the x from 0 to infinity.
Insert the LaTeX
AI generates clean LaTeX code that is ready to render in the document.
The generated result is returned as bare LaTeX content, so you can use it directly in the math block without cleaning up extra delimiters.
Cmd+J shortcut
Press Cmd+J on Mac or Ctrl+J on Windows anywhere in the editor to open the AI writing assistant. This is the fastest way to access Smart Continue and related writing actions without moving to the toolbar.
