Reference ManagerAdd Papers

Add References

Add papers to your library from PDFs, DOIs and links, online search, BibTeX or RIS files, Zotero, Mendeley, or by hand.

Overview

Every way of adding papers starts from the Add Papers button in Reference Manager. It opens a window with these options:

OptionUse it when you have
Upload PDFPDF files on your computer
URL / DOI ImportDOIs or links to papers
Search OnlineA title, author, journal, publisher or topic, but no link
BibTeX / RISA .bib or .ris file, or citation text, from EndNote or another tool
Import from ZoteroA Zotero library
Import from MendeleyA Mendeley library
Add ManuallyA source with no online record

Paperguide fills in each paper's details (title, authors, journal and so on) for you, so there's usually nothing to type.

Choose where papers go

Before you import, pick the destination under Save to workspace / folder. Papers are added to that workspace and filed into the folder you choose.

Keep Skip duplicates on (it's on by default) so papers already in your library aren't added again. See Handling duplicates.

Zotero and Mendeley imports work a little differently: each collection or folder you tick becomes a folder in Paperguide. See Import from Zotero & Mendeley.

Upload PDF

Choose Upload PDF

Click Add Papers and choose Upload PDF.

Add your files

Drag your PDFs into the window, or click browse files to pick them. You can upload up to 30 PDFs at once.

Upload

Click the upload button, which shows how many files you've added (for example Upload 3 PDFs). Paperguide reads each file and fills in the title, authors and journal. Each PDF becomes a reference with the file attached.

URL / DOI Import

Choose URL / DOI Import

Click Add Papers and choose URL / DOI Import.

Paste your DOIs or links

Paste a DOI (for example 10.1038/s41586-020-2649-2) or a link to a paper. To add several papers, paste one DOI or link per line.

Import

Click Import Reference (or Import 3 References for a list). Paperguide looks up each paper's details. When an open-access PDF is available, it's attached too.

DOIs and direct links to publisher pages give the most complete details. If Paperguide can't find details for a link, try uploading the PDF instead.

Search Online

Choose Search Online

Click Add Papers and choose Search Online.

Search

Pick what to search by (Title, Author, Journal, Publisher or Keyword), type your search, and click Search.

To narrow the results, use the filters: Source, Year, Journal, SJR Quartile and Access (Open Access or Subscription).

Add papers

Click Add Paper on a result to add it. To add several at once, select them and click Add Selected.

BibTeX / RIS

Use this to bring in references from EndNote, a LaTeX project or any other tool that exports BibTeX or RIS.

Choose BibTeX / RIS

Click Add Papers and choose BibTeX / RIS.

Upload or paste

Drop your .bib or .ris files into the window, or paste the citation text into the box below it. Paste either BibTeX or RIS, not both at once.

Import

Click the import button (for example Import 1 File or Import 12 References). Every reference is added at once.

BibTeX and RIS files hold reference details only, not PDFs. To add the PDFs afterwards, see Get PDFs with the Chrome Extension.

Import from Zotero or Mendeley

Connect your account once, then pick the collections, folders or papers you want. References come across with their PDFs, and your collections or folders become folders in Paperguide.

For step-by-step instructions, see Import from Zotero & Mendeley.

Add Manually

Use Add Manually for sources that have no online record, such as internal reports or unpublished work. Choose the type of source, enter its details (a title is required), and click Save.

Track your imports

Imports run in the background, so you can keep working. A progress card in the corner shows Importing Papers while the import runs and Import Completed when it's done.

  • Click Show results to see what happened to each paper, for example "Already in your library" for a skipped duplicate.
  • To stop an import, click the ✕ next to it, then click Stop import. Papers already added stay in your library.
