AI Writer
Read, write, and update your AI Writer documents with real citations, start a full cited draft, export to Word or PDF, format citations, and check for plagiarism from your AI assistant.
Your documents, in your chat
Once connected, your assistant can open the documents in your Paperguide AI Writer, write new ones, change them, and export them. Anything it writes is saved with live citations and a references section, exactly as if you had written it in the editor. Ask in plain language. The prompts below are examples.
If you belong to an organization with more than one workspace, your assistant asks you which one to use. A personal account has one workspace, so it is used automatically.
Find and read your documents
Ask for a document by title, or ask what is in a folder. Your assistant lists your documents with their folder and length, and reads any of them in full or one section at a time.
- "List my AI Writer documents."
- "Open my literature review on sleep and memory and summarise the Methods section."
- "Which documents are in my Thesis folder?"
When your assistant reads a document, every citation comes with the paper behind it: title, authors, year and DOI, and whether the paper is in your library. So it can discuss the sources, not just the text.
Save text as a document
Ask your assistant to save something it wrote, or something you pasted, as a new document. Headings and lists are kept.
- "Save this as a document called Background draft."
- "Write an introduction on microplastics in drinking water, cite papers from Paperguide, and save it to my Thesis folder."
To cite a paper, your assistant first finds it, with a Paperguide search or from your library, then links it in the text. Paperguide turns each link into a real citation and builds the reference list. A link to a paper Paperguide cannot find is left out of the saved text, and your assistant tells you which ones.
Change a document
Ask your assistant to rewrite a section, add to the end, or replace the whole text. Existing citations stay in place.
- "Rewrite the Discussion section of my sleep review in a more formal tone."
- "Add a Limitations section at the end."
- "Replace the whole document with this version."
Before any change, the previous text is saved as a named version in the document's history, so you can always go back. Your assistant cannot change a document while you have it open in the Paperguide editor; close it first.
Write a full cited draft
Ask for a complete document on a topic. Paperguide searches the papers, screens and reads them, builds an outline and writes the draft with citations and references, the same as Generate Document in the app.
- "Write a 2,000-word literature review on neuromuscular training for ACL injury prevention in adolescents, APA style."
- "Draft a background section from the papers in my Sleep folder."
Choose where citations come from: all papers, your library, or both. You can also set the length, the citation style and the language. The draft takes about 5 to 15 minutes to write. On the Free plan a draft is limited to 3,000 words. Your assistant gives you the link straight away so you can watch it come together, and you get an email when it is done. See Generate Document for how the draft is built.
Export to Word or PDF
Ask for a file. Your assistant gives you a download link and tells you exactly when it expires, 24 hours after it is made. The file has the in-text citations and a reference list in the document's citation style, or in any style you name.
- "Export my sleep review as a Word file."
- "Give me a PDF of this document in Vancouver style."
Format citations
Ask for a citation or a reference list in a named style for any papers, whether or not they are in a document: papers from a search, papers from your library, or DOIs.
- "Give me the APA reference for 10.1038/nature04286."
- "Format the three papers you just found in IEEE style."
Over 1,000 citation styles are supported. Documents format their own citations when you export them, so this is for papers you need cited somewhere else.
Check for plagiarism
Paste a passage and ask for a plagiarism check. Every sentence is searched on the web and compared with the pages found. Your assistant reports the sentences that match a source, with the page, how similar they are, and the share of the passage that matched.
- "Check this paragraph for plagiarism."
- "Run a plagiarism check on the Introduction of my sleep review."
Up to 200 words per check; your assistant splits longer text. A check takes a minute or two. Checks count against your plan's monthly plagiarism word allowance, the same one the checker in the editor uses. They do not use AI credits.
What it costs
Reading, writing, changing and exporting documents, and formatting citations, are free. A full draft uses AI Writer credits, the same as Generate Document in Paperguide. A plagiarism check uses your plagiarism word allowance. See Credits.
