Manage Tags in My Refrences

Learn to organize your references in Paperguide by creating, adding, and managing tags effectively—individually or in bulk.

Organize References Efficiently with Tags

Tags in Paperguide help you quickly group and filter papers, making your research library cleaner and more accessible. Use tags to create personalized categories—like "read soon," "machine learning," or "collaboration"—and streamline your referencing workflow.

Tags are flexible and work across all your references, not just within folders. Easily search or filter your library by any tag you've created.

What are Tags?

Tags are custom labels you assign to your references in Paperguide. They make it easy to organize, group, and find papers based on any criteria you decide.

Creating Tags

There are two main ways to create tags in Paperguide:

  • When adding or editing a reference:
Use the + Tag button in the reference details pane.

  • From the Tags sidebar:
Click Tags in your workspace sidebar, then select Add to create a new tag for future use.

You can create as many tags as you need! Use descriptive, short names so they're easy to browse and search.

Adding or Managing Tags for a Single Paper

Follow these steps to add or manage tags for one reference:

Open Reference Details

Open your My References list, then click the paper you want to tag to open its details pane.

Access the Tags Section

Look for the Tags section. You'll see existing tags (if any) and the option to add more.

Add or Remove Tags

Click the + Tag button to assign an existing tag or create a new one.
To remove a tag, simply click the "x" beside the tag name.

Save Changes

Your changes save automatically, so you can close the pane when done.

Adding Tags to Multiple Papers

Paperguide also lets you tag several references in one go—perfect for batch organizing.

Select Multiple Papers

In the My References view, use the checkboxes to select all papers you want to tag.

Open Bulk Actions

Once selected, find and click the Bulk Actions menu that appears at the top or side.

Choose Add Tags

Select Add Tags from the bulk actions list.

Pick or Create Tags

Choose existing tags or type to create new ones, then apply them to all selected papers at once.

Bulk tag changes help maintain consistency—especially after importing new references.

More About Tags

Keep your referencing system tidy and powerful by following these tag best practices:

  • Use tags in combination with folders for extra flexibility.

  • Regularly review your tags to avoid duplicates or overly narrow categories.

  • Use clear, memorable names (for example: To Read, Reviewed, Topics: AI).

  • Filter your references by multiple tags to create dynamic reading lists.

  • Removing a tag from the tag sidebar removes it from all references without deleting the papers themselves.
